Tech 1010 Newsletter - Issue 06
This month we've seen many tech companies go rainbow-mode with their logos and observe Juneteenth for the first or second time. Too often, though, these symbolic changes do not actually result in a more just work environment for our Black, queer, trans, and other marginalized colleagues. Workplace equity requires real, lasting, and systemic change that centers the voices of directly impacted workers.
We’re inspired by those workers who show up for their colleagues everyday: whether through their leadership of Employee Resource Groups, their participation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committees, their raising of questions during All Hands meetings, or simply their checking in with one another one-on-one. This often invisible, uncelebrated, and uncompensated labor is key to safeguarding, protecting, and caring for Black, queer, trans, and other marginalized workers who do not have the luxury of comfort or stability, even at the best of tech companies.
We can't wait for the day when these workers have a seat at the table to collectively negotiate over the terms of their employment, and we can only imagine what the tech sector will look like when Black, queer, trans, and other marginalized workers have the protections of a legally binding contract.
In solidarity,
Grace, Kate, RV, and Toy
