Happy March,
It's Women’s History month, and that got us thinking about equity in the workplace. The Equal Pay Act passed in 1963 and prohibits sex-based discrimination for workers in the same establishment who perform jobs that require equal skill, effort, and responsibility under similar working conditions. This act has been around for decades, and yet research shows women are still underrepresented in high paying jobs, and women are still paid less for the same work than their male counterparts with women of color experiencing the widest wage gap.
We know that unions have been one of the most effective tools to close that gap. Through collective bargaining, unions can establish uniform pay standards, give employers less room to undercut wages, set baseline wage increases, and ensure all workers enjoy the same base level of pay regardless of race, gender, or disability.
We think the best way to celebrate the incredible women who have been at the forefront of the labor movement since its beginnings is to not settle for anything less than equal wages for equal work in all sectors.
We honor those who came before us by carrying on the work of organizing and teaching new generations of people how to advocate for equity in the workplace.
With love and solidarity,
Danielle, Mary, and RV
