In the wake of the recent election, we’ve encountered a multitude of messages urging us to turn our attention towards community involvement. Yet, what does this truly entail? One image that arises is that of murmurations—those mesmerizing displays of starlings soaring in a synchronized swirl across the sky.
Murmurations begin with small groups of starlings gathering above their roost, gradually expanding in number. Each bird mirrors the movements of its seven closest companions, remaining attuned to the subtle shifts and signals of those around it. When one bird alters its direction or speed, a ripple effect ensues, prompting the others to follow suit.
Remarkably, murmurations operate without a leader. The ever-changing patterns emerge from the collective interaction of each bird within the group. This communal behavior serves as a protective strategy, as the sheer number of birds makes it challenging for predators to target any single individual.
So, what might it mean for us as humans to engage in a similar communion? Perhaps it’s as simple as attending a union meeting or dedicating time to a local mutual aid organization. Our contributions need not be grand to hold significance; what matters is our willingness to observe and respond to those around us. In this way, we can build a vibrant community, echoing the unity and strength of those starlings in flight.
In solidarity,
